माल-सामान
धातु-लकड़ी की चीजों से लेकर मंच के पर्दे और दीवारों पर लगने वाला पेंट, ध्वनि और प्रकाश के यंत्र — सामग्री की सूची तैयार है। जो कोई माल-मसौदे के साथ सहयोग करेगा, वह कला को उसके सामाजिक स्वरूप में लाएगा।
सूझबूझ
आर्किटेक्ट से लेकर फर्श, लकड़ी-धातु और बिजली का काम जानने वाले, तरह-तरह की यांत्रिकी-इंजीनियरी जानने वाले — हर विधा में कुशल लोगों का सहयोग चाहिए।
कलेला आणि सामाजिकतेला सर्जनाच्या नव्या आशा दाखवणारा एक रंगमंच नागपुरात तयार होतो आहे. ह्या सामूहिक प्रयत्नांमध्ये आपल्या सगळ्यांना आपापली भूमिका निवडायची आणि पार पाडायची आहे.
कितीतरी दिवसांपासून, ह्या पत्राची तयारी आम्हीं मनातल्यामनातच करत होतो. प्रत्यक्षात ते लिहिण्याची संधी मिळेल की नाहीं, ही शंका मनात होतीच. बघा, ती संधी आता चालून आली आहे. कलेला आणि सामाजिकतेला सर्जनाच्या नव्या आशा दाखवणारा एक रंगमंच नागपुरात तयार होतो आहे. ह्या सामूहिक प्रयत्नांमध्ये आपल्या सगळ्यांना आपापली भूमिका निवडायची आणि पार पाडायची आहे. आपला वेळ, कौशल्य, साधनसामग्री, अथवा आर्थिक हातभार, . . . जमेल त्या अथवा सगळ्या मार्गांनी.
कला आणि रंगभूमीवर प्रेम करणाऱ्या नागपुरातील मित्रमंडळींचं अनेक दिवसांपासून एक स्वप्न होतं — आपल्या शहरात आपलं स्वतःचं एक नाट्यगृह असावं — भेटीगाठींसाठी आपला हक्काचा अगदी अनौपचारिक असा कट्टा. एक असं ठिकाण, जिथे कला आणि सामाजिकतेचे मनोवेधक प्रयोग सोबतीनं होतील, जिथे आर्थिक ताळमेळ जुळवण्यासाठी गर्दी जमवून प्रयोग करण्याचा दबाव कलाकारांवर नसेल, जिथे प्रेक्षकांना मनात तटस्थ, निष्क्रीय उपभोक्त्याचा भाव निर्माण व्हावा इतके दूर बसावे लागणार नाही. जिथे कलेच्या माध्यमातून सामाजिकतेवरही बोललं तर जाईल, परंतु कुठल्या सैद्धांतिक दबावाखाली नाही, तर अगदी खेळीमेळीच्या वातावरणात, लीलाभावाने.
आणि… असा एक कट्टा आता आपल्याला मिळाला आहे!
महाराष्ट्र गांधी स्मारक निधीने, त्यांच्या बजाजनगर स्थित कस्तुरबा भवनाचा काही भाग स्नेहभावनेनं आपल्याला, निरूपक फाऊंडेशनला, दिला आहे. ह्या वास्तूत काही अंतर्गत बदल करण्याची गरज आहे. ह्यात २०० आसनांचं नाट्यगृह, १२५ आसनांचा (ब्लॅक बॉक्सच्या धर्तीवर) एक प्रायोगिक मंच, एक छोटं पुस्तकालय, आर्ट गॅलरी, कलाकारांसाठी एक निवासस्थान, आणि गप्पांचे अड्डे जमण्यासाठी एक कॅफे बनवण्याचं काम जोमाने सुरू आहे. ह्या कामातील प्रगती बघण्यासाठी आपण वेळ मिळेल तेव्हा तेथे भेट देऊ शकता.
हे सामूहिक स्वप्न प्रत्यक्षात उतरवायचे तर तीन प्रकारच्या सहयोगाच्या शक्यता दिसतात.
एक: आर्थिक मदत. इमारत जुनी आणि आधुनिक गरजांसाठी अपुरी आहे. नाट्यप्रयोगांसाठी आवश्यक ते बदल करावे लागतील. आसनव्यवस्था नव्याने करावी लागेल. दुरुस्तीची बरीच कामं आहेत. पुढे जाऊन इमारतीचं भाडं, देखभालीचा खर्च, वीजपाण्याची देयकं, इत्यादींसोबतच कलाकारांचं/कर्मचाऱ्यांचं मानधन देण्याची व्यवस्थाही करावी लागणार आहे.
दोन: वस्तुरूपात. डागडुजीसाठी सिमेंट, लोखंड, लाकूड, भिंतींचा रंग, रंगमंचाचे पडदे, ध्वनी आणि प्रकाशाची उपकरणं, एअर कंडिशनर्स, आणि अशा अनेक गोष्टींची आवश्यकता आहे. तुम्हीं थेट वस्तू देऊ शकता, परिचितांकडून त्या मिळवून देऊ शकता, किंवा त्या मिळवण्यासाठी साहाय्य करू शकता.
तीन: अनुभव आणि कौशल्य. अशी अनेक कामं आहेत ज्यात तज्ज्ञांची, अनुभवी नजरेची आवश्यकता असेल. जसे, आर्किटेक्ट्स, लाकूडकाम, धातूकाम, विद्युतकाम जाणणारे, एवढेच नव्हें तर, श्रम करणारे कुशल-अकुशल कामगार आणि सौंदर्यशास्त्रातील जाणकारदेखील.
पैसा आणि साहित्य जोडण्याचे एक वेगळे कौशल्य तर असतेच, पण माणसे जोडणे ही सगळ्यांत आवश्यक – आणि कधीकधी सगळ्यांत अवघड कामगिरी असते.
आपण ह्या कामांमध्ये कदाचित कुठल्या एका स्वरूपात, कदाचित तीनही स्वरूपात साहाय्य करू शकत असाल. आम्हांला फोनवर किंवा प्रत्यक्ष भेटून तसे कळवा.
पैसा आणि साहित्याची जमवाजमव तर कसेहीकरून होऊन जाईल. पण आपले प्रेम आणि आपली उपस्थिती ह्यांना मात्र कुठलाच पर्याय असू शकत नाही. नाट्यगृह तयार होण्याच्या काळात आपण ह्या जागेवर येत राहाल, आपला अड्डा जमवाल, आणि काम पूर्ण झाल्यावर पाहुण्यांच्या स्वागताला यजमानाच्या भूमिकेत उपस्थित असाल, ह्याची आम्हांला खात्री आहे.
सस्नेह.
नागपुर में कलात्मक और सामाजिक सृजन के नए रास्ते खोलने वाला एक मंच, एक मंडप तैयार हो रहा है। इस सामूहिक प्रयास में हम सभी को अपनी-अपनी भूमिका निभानी पड़ेगी।
हम न जाने कब से इस चिट्ठी की सामग्री मन-ही-मन गढ़ रहे हैं । लेकिन यह पता नहीं था कि इसे लिखने का मौका आएगा या नहीं। देखिए! आज वह अवसर सामने है | नागपुर में कलात्मक और सामाजिक सृजन के नए रास्ते खोलने वाला एक मंच, एक मंडप तैयार हो रहा है । इस सामूहिक प्रयास में हम सभी को अपनी-अपनी भूमिका निभानी पड़ेगी। समय, कौशल, साधन-सामग्री, धन... जिस किसी माध्यम हो सके ।
कला और रंगमंच से स्नेह रखने वाले सब मित्रों की यह हसरत सालों-साल रही है कि शहर में अपना एक थिएटर हो, अपना ही रंगमंच ! एक ऐसा ठिकाना जहाँ कला और सामाजिकता के प्रयोग साथ-साथ हो सकें । कलाकारों पर यह दबाव न हो कि वे बाजारू रचनाओं के सहारे टिकट बेच के भीड़ इकट्ठी करें, और दर्शक इतने दूर न बैठें कि उन्हें निष्क्रिय उपभोक्ता जैसा एहसास हो। जहाँ कला सामाजिक चिंताओं से रूबरू हो, पर लीला-भाव के साथ, किसी तरह की सैद्धांतिक गंभीरता के वजन तले नहीं ।
ऐसा एक ठीया महाराष्ट्र गांधी स्मारक निधि की उदारता से हमें मिल गया है। नागपुर के बजाज नगर में स्थित कस्तूरबा भवन का कुछ हिस्सा इन्होंने निरूपक प्रतिष्ठान को सौंपा है। इस भवन का कायाकल्प कर इसमें 175 की क्षमता का एक थिएटर, 125 की क्षमता का ब्लैक बॉक्स की तर्ज पर का एक प्रायोगिक थिएटर, विश्राम गृह, जलपान गृह इत्यादि बनाने का काम जोर-शोर से शुरू हो चुका है ।
इस सामूहिक सपने को पूरा करने में तीन तरह से सहयोग हो सकता है.
एक : आर्थिक। इमारत पुरानी है और आज की जरूरतों के लिए संगत नहीं है। सभागृह को नाट्य प्रयोगों के हिसाब से तैयार करना है, दर्शक दीर्घा को नये सिरे से बैठाना है । मरम्मत के बहुत से काम होने हैं, जो शुरू हो गये हैं।
दो : माल - सामान । जीर्णोद्धार में बहुत-सी सामग्री की आवश्यकता होगी। इसमें धातु - लकड़ी की चीजों से ले कर मंच के पर्दे और दीवारों पर लगने वाला पेंट तक शामिल हैं । ध्वनि और प्रकाश, के तरह-तरह के यंत्र लगेंगे थिएटर को तैयार करने के लिए।
तीन : सूझबूझ ।कई ऐसे काम होने हैं जिनमें विशेष ज्ञान लगेगा, दक्षता लगेगी। आर्किटेक्ट से ले कर फर्श तैयार करने वाले, लकड़ी-धातु और बिजली का काम जानने वाले, तरह- तरह की यांत्रिकी-इंजीनियरी जानने वाले।
हो सकता है कि इस समय आप इनमें से किसी एक श्रेणी में ही सहयोग कर सकते हैं! हो सकता है तीनों में! हमें फोन पर या मिलकर बताएं ।
साधन तो जैसे-तैसे आ ही जाएँगे, लेकिन आपकी उपस्थिति और प्यार का कोई पर्याय नहीं है । हम मान के चलते हैं कि मरम्मत के काम के दौरान भी इस ठीये पर आपका आना- जाना लगा रहेगा । और यह भी कि जब काम पूरा हो जाएगा, तब आप मेहमानों के स्वागत के लिए मेजबान की भूमिका में खड़े मिलेंगे।

For quite some time now, we have been wishing that we would get to write such a letter to you someday—unsure, though, if the wish would ever materialise. And look — the opportunity is now right in front of us! In Nagpur, a stage — a performance space — is taking shape. In this collective effort, each of us will have to play our part. Whether through time, skill, material, money... In whatever way we can.
Art- and theatre-loving people like us in Nagpur have had a long-standing shared dream: of having a stage, a theatre, a meeting place that we could call our own. A space where art and community can be explored together; where artists are not under pressure of drawing crowds or selling tickets; where creativity has a free hand, untouched by the compulsions of commerce; where the audience does not have to sit at a distance from the stage, getting reduced to passive consumers; and where art engages with social concerns in a playful way, unburdened by rigid ideological doctrines.
And now, we’ve found such a space!
The Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi has generously let out a portion of Kasturba Bhawan in Bajaj Nagar, Nagpur, to us, Nirupak Foundation. The space is now undergoing a transformation that will open many avenues for art, creativity, and social engagement. The plan is to develop the existing building into several purpose-specific spaces like, a 200-seat proscenium theatre, a 125-seat experimental (black box) theatre, a small library, an art gallery, a rest house, and a café for all of us to gather and spend time together. The work is in full swing, and you can track its progress whenever you visit the space.
To turn this collective dream into a reality, each of us will have to play a part—to contribute, participate, and support through:
First: Finances. The building is old and no longer suited to today’s needs. The hall has to be reshaped for theatre experiments, and the seating has to be redone entirely. A lot of repair work needs to be done — and all of this has already begun. Going forward, we’ll also need to manage rent, maintenance, other expenses, including honorariums for artists.
Second: Material. We’ll need all sorts of things — cement, iron, wood, paint for the walls, stage curtains! Sound and light equipment, air conditioners, and many other items. You can donate things directly, arrange them from somewhere, or help us source them in any other way.
Third: Know-how. There’s a lot to be done that needs special knowledge and skills — architects and floor finishers, people who know woodwork, metal, and electrical work, those who understand different kinds of things like mechanical engineering, plastering, masonry, and even aesthetics!
Raising funds and support is one thing, but bringing good people together is the most important — and sometimes the most difficult — task.
You can contribute in one of these categories, or maybe in all three! Just let us know over a call or by meeting us in person.
Resources can somehow be managed, but there’s no substitute for your presence and love. We trust that even during the repair work, you’ll keep dropping by this place. And when the work is complete, we’ll find you standing there as hosts, welcoming the guests.
